A word ladder asks you to do something modest: change one letter. The surprise is how far that small action can take you.
Make the first connection
Take BARN. Try changing A to O: BORN. Both words have four letters and the other three letters stay exactly where they were. That is one valid move. Changing straight from BARN to BOON does not work, because both A and R change. BORN is the bridge that makes the connection.
In Poople you type the complete new word. You do not click a tile to replace one character. Press Enter to commit the move; until then, Backspace lets you edit. It is useful to say your intended word to yourself before submitting it.
A whole route, not just a guess

This route uses five accepted changes. Look at BOON → GOON → GOOP: one consonant changes, then another. You never need to change the whole word at once. The shape of the word gradually becomes the destination.
Read what the board tells you
A brown tile matches POOP in the same position. BORN has a matching O in the second position. BOON adds another matching O. GOOP matches the last three positions, leaving only the first letter to change.
This particular route steadily gains matches, but other routes may temporarily lose one. The board is reporting spelling. It cannot promise that the word with the most brown tiles will have the easiest next move.
Give yourself a useful first goal
For a first game, aim to finish with words you recognize. Once you have a complete route, compare it with the minimum. A longer route still teaches connections. A Perfect result means you matched the shortest possible length; it does not require one specific sequence.
Practice mode is a place to test a hunch. Revisit an earlier word if you need to; remember that it adds another move. If you get stuck, pause and list two or three legal neighbors of your current word. That is often more useful than repeatedly guessing toward POOP.
